David C. Maland has been identified as the U.S. Border Patrol agent who was murdered in Vermont, according to Vermont’s governor and other officials.
“I am deeply saddened by the tragic loss of life yesterday in Coventry which resulted in the death of Border Patrol Agent David ‘Chris’ Maland,” Gov. Phil Scott wrote.
“I just want to put a name to the face of the officer that was killed yesterday. His name is David Maland, and I thank you very much for the moment of silence,” Sen. Russ Ingalls, R-Essex, said on the floor of the state Legislature, according to VTDigger.
The suspects have not been publicly named.
NewsNation’s Ali Bradley wrote, “Update via DHS sources who tell me there were 2 suspects in the altercation along the highway in Vermont yesterday—One male and one female. The male was from Germany (H1B visa – overstay). Both were armed. The agents performed a vehicle stop, and at some point a gunfight ensued.”
She added: “The male suspect was shot and killed. The female was also wounded (no update on her status). The Border Patrol agent, identified as 44 y/o David Maland was shot and later succumbed to his injuries. His partner was not injured. The woman who was injured in the vehicle is a U.S. citizen. Sources say both suspects in the car were armed.”
Authorities have not yet confirmed the suspects’ immigration status or names. Bradley initially wrote, “Border Patrol agent in Vermont is dead after being shot in the neck by an illegal immigrant who sources say was a ‘visa overstay.'” Fox News reported that the suspect’s immigration status was not immediately available.
“The two suspects — a man and a woman — were on the radar of authorities before Monday’s incident and that they were looking to buy real estate — in the Northeast Kingdom,” WCAX wrote.
Public records show David Maland with addresses in Maine, Vermont, Texas, Minnesota, Virginia, and Washington D.C.
Gov. Scott called it a “tragic situation in Coventry,” which led to the death of Maland. He did not share additional details. Michael W. Banks, Border Patrol chief, wrote other agents that Maland “was killed by gunfire sustained following a traffic stop.”
According to WAMC, Maland was “shot about 3:15 p.m. on Interstate 91 in Coventry, about 20 miles from the border.” A suspect was killed, and another is in custody, according to WAMC.
“CBP Sources tell me the Border Patrol agent who was shot and killed in Vermont today was 44 y/o David Maland —He had been with the patrol for nearly a decade—Becoming part of the “Green Family” in 2015,” Bradley wrote. “Maland transferred from Texas to Vermont where he worked in the Swanton Sector along the northern border.”
Maland’s death came on the same day that President Donald Trump was inaugurated and signed a slew of executive orders targeting border security, illegal immigration, and, especially illegal immigrants who commit crimes.
“Our most profound thoughts & prayers are with the loved ones of Border Patrol agent David C. Maland, who was tragically killed at the Swanton Sector of our Northern Border yesterday. Our courageous CBP agents risk their lives every day to protect & defend our borders,” U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney wrote on Facebook. “We will continue working to ensure they have the resources & support they need to prevent another senseless tragedy like this one.”
The Port Authority Police Benevolent Association wrote, “Rest in Peace, United States Border Patrol Agent David C. Maland, E.O.W. 1/20/2025. Agent Maland was shot and killed during a traffic stop on Interstate 91 in Vermont, about 20 miles south of U.S.- Canada border. Agent Maland served with the United States Border Patrol since 2015 and was 44 years old. David, rest in the Lord’s eternal embrace. Always Honored, Never Forgotten.”
House Committee on Homeland Security Chairman Mark E. Green, MD (R-TN) said in a statement:
“I am heartbroken by the loss of Agent David Maland, a dedicated Border Patrol agent who was horrifically shot in the line of duty while serving at our northern border. We owe an immense debt of gratitude to Agent Maland for nearly a decade of service protecting our communities in the force. We must never forget that the men and women in green on the frontlines of this border crisis defend our homeland at great personal cost. Far too often these courageous public servants, like Agent Maland, pay the ultimate price. Please join me in prayer for Agent Maland’s loved ones and fellow agents as they mourn this tragic loss and honor his memory.”
