Republican State Sen. Alberta Darling is retiring on Dec. 1, 2022, setting up a battle to keep the supermajority in the state Senate.
Darling’s term ends in 2025. The election to replace her would likely be in the April election. She has served 29 years in the state Legislature.
Darling was in the state Assembly before being first elected to the state Senate in 1993. In 2011, she defeated a recall attempt.
People praised Darling for her decades of leadership.

Statement from Alberta Darling
“Today, I announced I will be stepping down from the State Senate effective December 1, 2022,” Alberta Darling announced on Nov. 23, 2022.
“I am forever grateful to the people of the 8th Senate District for placing their trust in me for so long.”
Alberta Darling added: “Together, we worked to make our great state even better. Thank you for your support, guidance, and wisdom over the years. I look forward to spending more time with family and friends. On, Wisconsin”
