Chad Richards, 23, is expected to be charged with first-degree intentional homicide, endangering safety by use of a dangerous weapon and disorderly conduct while armed.

At 11:54PM Aug. 30, Whitewater police say Kara Welsh, 21, of Plainfield, Ill., was shot and killed in an apartment located at 147 West Whitewater Street, #203.

A gofundme page has been established for Welsh’s family. As on noon Tueday, $35,812 had been raised. The page wrote:

‘Dear Friends, Family, and Kind Supporters,
We are deeply saddened by the tragic passing of our beloved, Kara Welsh. Kara was a daughter, sister, dear friend and teammate who grew up in Plainfield, Illinois. Kara had a unique ability to bring joy to any person she crossed paths with, always putting a smile on people’s faces with her sense of humor, unwavering support and sweet disposition. Kara, 21 years old, was excited to be in her rising senior year as a gymnast at UW-Whitewater which was abruptly cut short on August 30th, by a heartless act of violence.
We are completely heartbroken for our beloved Welsh family – Nancy, Tom, and Kaeli as they navigate this incredibly difficult time. They will surely have so much to endure in the near future and we would like to help ease the financial burden during this period of grief, planning and travel that will surely be necessary.
We kindly ask for your heartfelt contributions to support the Welsh family. Please know that no matter the size, it will be greatly appreciated and 100% of the funds will go directly to the Welsh family.
Please share this link and send your love to Kara’s family and friends, as well as her Aspire and Whitewater gymnastics teammates and families during this difficult time. We love you Kara & always will – Rest well sweetheart!
With heartfelt gratitude,
The Brooks Family & Close Family Friends’
