On Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2025, Officer Daniel Gonzales and his partner responded to a shots-fired call when they observed an individual in the street discharging a rifle,” the Milwaukee Police Association wrote.

“Upon exiting their squad car, both officers issued verbal commands instructing the subject to drop the weapon. The suspect, however, opened fire, striking Officer Gonzales in the calf and the side of the chest. In response, Officer Gonzales’ partner returned fire, striking the suspect multiple times and neutralizing the threat.”\

Officer Gonzales “was transported to a Level 1 trauma center, where he underwent emergency surgery,” the MPA wrote.

“Fortunately, the procedure was successful, and he is now in recovery. He later underwent a second surgery to repair his calf.”

Gonzales has now been released from the hospital, and he praised first responders and hospital staff for his care. “Nothing short of a miracle,” Gonzales said.

Officer Gonzales “faces a long road to recovery, during which he will be unable to work, resulting in the loss of numerous overtime opportunities. Additionally, his wife will take time off from work to assist him during his rehabilitation,” the MPA wrote.

In another statement, the MPA wrote, “On Wednesday, February 12, 2025, at approximately 11:50 a.m., Officer Daniel Gonzales encountered a subject walking down the street firing shots from a rifle. The suspect fired shots at Officer Gonzales, and he was shot in the body and calf. Officer Gonzales was rushed to Froedtert Hospital and underwent emergency surgery.”

“Since he was shot on February 12, 2025, Officer Gonzales, 34, has been in the fight of his life, enduring multiple surgeries but never giving up. One week after the armed criminal tried to kill him simply for protecting the community, Milwaukee Police Officer Daniel Gonzales’ family, friends and co-workers will gather to celebrate as Dan is released from Froedtert Hospital today. The MPA anticipates the time of his release to be around 12:00 P.M. and he will be exiting Door 6,” the MPA wrote.

Milwaukee Police Association Fallen Heroes INC. “has one goal, to assist law enforcement officers, especially those with the Milwaukee Police Department as well as their dependents, in the event of an officer’s death, injury disability or extraordinary need. Consider donating today to a specific cause,” according to its website.
