Police Officer Tyler Herndon, 25, was shot and killed while he and other officers responded to a burglary in progress at a car wash at 313 Beatty Drive at about 3:30. The subject was shot and wounded by other officers on the scene. He was charged with first-degree murder.

The Mount Holly police officer who was killed in the line of duty has been identified as Tyler Avery Herndon, DOB: 12/13/1994. Officer Herndon had been an officer with the Mount Holly Police Department for less than two years. There were no additional officers that were injured during the incident.
The suspect in the case has been identified as Joshua Tyler Funk, DOB: 11/14/1996. He has been charged with murder and is being transported to the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office, where he will remain in custody.
Two Mount Holly police officers and a Gaston County police officer were also involved in the incident. The three officers have been placed on administrative leave to ensure their respective department policies and procedures were followed. This is standard procedure.
