Shamsud Din Jabbar: New Orleans Terrorist Had ISIS Flag, Report Says

-

Shamsud Din Jabbar, the New Orleans terrorist, had an ISIS flag, the FBI said, as the death toll in the Bourbon Street terrorist attack climbed to 15.

“An ISIS flag was located in the vehicle and the FBI is working to determine the subject’s potential associations and affiliations with terrorist organizations. Weapons and a potential IED were located in the subject’s vehicle. Other potential IEDs were also located in the French Quarter,” the FBI said in a statement.

According to Fox, the terrorist, who was shot and killed by police at the scene, is from Houston, Texas. The ISIS flag was found “on the pickup truck,” according to Fox News. He is a U.S. citizen who served in the U.S. Army.

In a speech, President Joe Biden said Din Jabbar “posted videos on social media indicating that he was inspired by ISIS, especially the desire to kill.”

Photos from the scene show the flag pole on the white truck. The New York Post released a photo of Din Jabbar and reported, via sources, that he was in the U.S. military for a decade.

Authorities are describing the attack as an act of terrorism. The terrorist slammed into New Years Eve revelers along New Orleans’ iconic Bourbon Street in the early morning hours of Jan. 1, 2025. Another 35 people were injured, police said; videos showed the carnage with wounded people lying throughout the street.

In addition, a Tesla blew up outside the Trump hotel in Las Vegas. Authorities have not revealed the identity of that driver, who died in the blast, but indications pointed to the cybertruck being fashioned into a car bomb. Whether the incidents are connected is not clear.

Nola.com first broke the news that the suspect’s name is Shamsud Din Jabbar, citing an anonymous law enforcement source. Shamsud Din Jabbar is 42 years old and was wearing military gear, according to the New Orleans, Louisiana, news site.

Shamsud Din Jabbar: Suspect Truck Was Listed on a Car Rental Website

According to Fox, Shamsud Din Jabbar is not the only suspect in the terrorist attack; there are four to five others but they have not been named.

However, according to CNN, the truck “was listed on the car rental site Turo” and did not belong to the suspect. Authorities revealed that the cybertruck in Las Vegas was rented through the same site.

“A Glock handgun and .308 caliber rifle equipped with optics and a sensor” were found at the scene, Fox News reported.

The city has steel barriers to stop a vehicle attack on Bourbon Street but they were “not deployed” because they were “being repaired,” Nola.com reported.

Facebook and X pages in the suspect’s name are deleted.

The terrorist’s actions were “very intentional,” said police Superintendent Anne Kirkpatrick, in a news conference. “This man was trying to run over as many people as he possibly could.”

CNN reported that Din Jabbar also had “multiple suspected explosive devices” that were found in an ice chest in the truck.”

“At about 3:17 a.m., multiple law enforcement officers responded to a report of a vehicle having driven into a crowd of pedestrians on Bourbon Street. Multiple people were reportedly struck before the vehicle crashed,” the New Orleans Police Department wrote in a statement.

“Upon further investigation, a total of 10 victims were declared to be deceased on scene. At this time, approximately 35 additional victims were determined to have suffered injuries in relation to this incident. Those injured were transported to multiple local and area hospitals via EMS for treatment. No updates are currently available on these victims’ condition,” police wrote.

“After the vehicle came to a stop, the suspect reportedly opened fire on responding officers, who returned fire.”

Fox News initially reported that the truck the suspect used to murder pedestrians crossed over the U.S./Mexico border in Eagle Pass, Texas. However, the network later updated its story to say that “the identification of the driver who crossed the border does not appear to be the suspect” and the truck was spotted in Eagle Pass in November, not recently.

As noted, CNN reported that he is a U.S. citizen.

New Orleans Terrorist Attack Victims: Who Were They?

President Jere W. Morehead, of the University of Georgia, confirmed that one of its students was “critically injured in the attack.” The University of Georgia is competing in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans.

I am deeply saddened by the devastating attack in New Orleans overnight, and I extend my sincere condolences to the victims, their families, and all those affected by this terrible tragedy,” he wrote on X.

“At this point, we have learned that a University of Georgia student was critically injured in the attack and is receiving medical treatment. I have spoken to the student’s family and shared my concern, support and well wishes on behalf of the entire UGA community. I would like to express my gratitude to all the first responders who moved so quickly to help those affected by this senseless act of violence, as well as to the medical personnel who are caring for the injured,” he continued.
